Upcoming Activities

* Easter Egg Hunt and Soup/Salad Fellowship.  Yes, Easter is almost here!  Following our worship service on Sunday, March 29, the children will hunt for some Easter Eggs and everyone will join together for soup & salad and a time of fellowship.  Please mark your calendars and watch upcoming bulletins for specific information.

* Our monthly business meeting is Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.  Every member is encouraged to attend as we look to the practical matters of the church.  Join us as we seek the Lord’s leadership in deciding the various issues which confront our church family!

Ephesians 5:25

Wednesday Evening

“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 1:1

We have made some changes to our Wednesday evening prayer service.  First, we are no longer meeting in the auditorium, rather, we are gathering in the Fellowship Hall.  I believe it helps us feel more like the church family we are as we pray.  Second, we have dropped the use of the two sided prayer request sheet that has been part of our prayer meeting since before I came as your pastor.  Instead, we are praying over requests made at the beginning of our prayer time and as the Holy Spirit leads.  Furthermore, we are selecting different Bethesda families each week, gathering their specific requests, and lifting those requests to the Lord.

Our new approach is only two weeks old but I have been blessed by our time together.  We all know the Bethesda membership is not very large (only 37) BUT there are NOT 37 members attending our prayer meetings!  Those of you not joining us are missing out on one of the most important elements of Christian service:  prayer.

Before our prayer time this past Wednesday, I read and shared briefly on the text above, 2 Peter 1:1.  The various translations brought out different aspects of this text and we had a brief discussion on it.  I enjoyed the discussion enough that I decided to engage in just a little personal study and seek some clarification as well as illumination from this passage.

1.  The ESV uses “Simeon” for Peter’s name while other translations use “Simon”.  Both forms of his name are used interchangeably in the NT.  The difference in this verse lies with different manuscripts.  Some of the ancient texts use “Simon” while others use “Simeon”.  I think you will agree it really makes no difference relative to the content.  Peter is doing the writing!

2.  The phrase “have obtained” in the ESV is rendered “have received” in other versions.  “Obtain” almost sounds like the faith they received is something they reached for and got.  But the word translated “obtained” actually means to “obtain by lot”.  In today’s speech we might say “I got lucky!”  You received something you weren’t striving for, it just came.  Surely that is true of our faith.  God alone must provide the faith we require.

3.  “A faith of equal standing with ours” is another phrase we spent some time discussing.  The NAS renders this phrase as “the same kind of faith as ours”.  The King James reads “like precious faith with us”.  The NIV is similar with “a faith as precious as ours.”

The differences come from the word Peter used:  “isotimon”, a word only used here in the New Testament  You may recognize the “iso” prefix from English words such as “isotope” (from the Greek “equal place”), used to describe two forms of the same element.  This prefix means “equal”.  The last part of the word means “honor” or “price”.  So Peter is describing our faith as “equal honor” or “equal value”.  That is why the various translations read slightly differently.  The translators either take the “equal honor” aspect (hence, “equal standing”) or the “equal value” aspect (giving us “like precious”).

The great Southern Baptist Greek scholar A. T. Robertson wrote, “The faith which they have obtained is like in honor and privilege with that of Peter or any of the apostles.”  WOW!  The faith we have in Christ is just like the faith Peter had, a man who was with the Lord, saw the Lord, heard the Lord, walked on water with the Lord, etc.!

That thought alone blows my mind!

Come join us this Wednesday evening as we share some Scripture and then lift our requests to the throne of our heavenly Father.

The Luther Monthly

Since your pastor is fond of Luther, I thought I would invoke some personal privilege and include a Luther quote each month.  Much of what the good doctor says stirs one’s mind as well as “stirs the pot” of discussion!

“Apart from the church, salvation is impossible.”
Martin Luther

Good Friday Service

Easter is the first Sunday of April this year, only a month away.  For the past two years, Bethesda has held a Good Friday evening service and that will be the case once again this year.  Please watch the bulletins over the coming Sundays for announcements relative to our Good Friday service on April 3, make plans to attend, and bring family and friends.

“If you call yourself a Christian but you are not a member of the church you regularly attend, I worry that you might be going to hell.”
Mark Dever
Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

Some special prayer requests have been shared this week and I want us to keep lifting them to the Lord.

First, former pastor Randy Curless lost his mother this week.  Randy is well known not only by our church but also throughout the St. Louis community.  Please keep him and the family in your prayers.

Second, our brother Nolan Brook is still fighting a high fever which comes and goes.  In diagnosing the problem, doctors have found that three of his lymph nodes are very swollen.  As of this writing, doctors are pursuing the possibility it is the result of a fungal infection actually common in our area.  Please continue to pray for Nolan, those treating him, and his parents.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Matthew 7:7-8

Special Ministry Opportunity

On Saturday, March 28, Bethesda members may take a tour of our local fire station from 11 a.m. to noon.  Cottleville Station #1 is at the corner of N and Motherhead.  This opportunity is led by our Outreach Committee which is also organizing a meal to take to the station.  We are showing our appreciation for all that the firefighters do.

There will be sign-up sheets in the foyer of the church for those who wish to take the tour and/or donate food.

Ladies Book Study

Ladies, Pam is leading you in a spring book study beginning this month!

The introductory session will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.  The study will then meet on Tuesdays from April 14 through May 19.  You will be studying the book “He Speaks to Me:  Preparing to Hear from God” by Priscilla Shirer.

This is a great opportunity not only to study a book but also a time to study Scripture and fellowship with one another.  Mark your calendars and watch future bulletins for more information.

Pastor’s Postscript

A public thank you to brother Gary Robnett for stepping in at the very last minute and preaching for me last Sunday morning.  I truly appreciate his willingness to do so.

Furthermore, I appreciate the prayers of everyone at Bethesda on my behalf.  I am feeling much better and more like myself (I don’t know, is that good?).  If the Lord wills I will be back in the pulpit this Sunday.

Debbie mentioned to me last evening how quickly February has gone.  We are already two months through 2015.  Spring will be here before we know it!  I know the Trustees will be having a work day within the next two months, somewhat like our spring cleaning day for our church.

As February ends and March begins, I pray the Lord would pour out His blessings on each of you.  I also pray that He gives us both the wisdom and the desire to serve Him in our community.

May all we say and do bring glory and honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Sermon Seconds

Here is Martin Luther with some thoughts on a Christian being both a sinner and the “beloved of God”.

“Paradoxically, a Christian is both right and wrong, holy and profane, an enemy of God and a child of God. These contradictions no person can harmonize who does not understand the true way of salvation. Under the papacy we were told to toil until the feeling of guilt had left us. But the authors of this deranged idea were frequently driven to despair in the hour of death. It would have happened to me, if Christ had not mercifully delivered me from this error.

We comfort the afflicted sinner in this manner: Brother, you can never be perfect in this life, but you can be holy. He will say: “How can I be holy when I feel my sins?” I answer: You feel sin? That is a good sign. To realize that one is ill is a step, and a very necessary step, toward recovery. “But how will I get rid of my sin?” he will ask. I answer: See the heavenly Physician, Christ, who heals the broken-hearted. Do not consult that Quackdoctor, Reason. Believe in Christ and your sins will be pardoned. His righteousness will become your righteousness, and your sins will become His sins. …

A Christian is beloved of God and a sinner. How can these two contradictions be harmonized: I am a sinner and deserve God’s wrath and punishment, and yet the Father loves me? Christ alone can harmonize these contradictions. He is the Mediator.”

Pastor’s Postscript

I encourage every member of our church to attend our picnic this coming Saturday at 4 p.m.  Maybe you do not wish to participate in any of the games.  Maybe you have no one to bring with you.  That’s fine.  Bring your drink and a couple of side dishes to share and then enjoy the time of fellowship where we may share our joys (and sorrows) with one another and get to know each other better than we do.  Such fellowship enables us to better pray for one another in the coming days.  It is important in your growth as a Christian to spend time with your Christian family and that means more than just Sunday mornings!  I look forward to seeing you there.

May Jesus be magnified in all you do and say this week!

Business Meeting

Our monthly business meeting is this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.  One item on the agenda is a proposal from the Trustees for a new church sign.  I encourage ever member to attend the meeting and have a voice in this selection.

  Autumn      Bonfire

Our annual bonfire will take place this Saturday evening beginning at 6 p.m. behind the church.  Please bring some firewood (if you have any), some goodies to eat (hot dogs, chips, marshmallows, etc.), something to drink, and your lawn chair!

Sermon Extras

The main thrust of my message yesterday was to convey some certainties concerning the future of Christians like you and me.  These certainties, as Paul notes in verse 18, are to bring encouragement.  I shared with you 5 certain future events outlined in these paragraphs:  the Lord returns, the dead are raised, the living are raptured, a reunion occurs, and eternity begins.

Concerning the rapture, the common teaching of our day is that the Lord will return prior to 7 years of great tribulation on the earth and remove his followers via the rapture.  Following the tribulation, Christ will come to earth in His second coming to essentially end history and deal with the lost.

In this view the rapture is seen as a quiet affair.  Jesus comes, raises his dead followers, and takes his living followers with him back into the air.  The lost world “awakens” to find many missing people but no good explanation for their disappearance.

I once held this position.  However, the more I have examined the 1 Thessalonians passage as well as others, I do not see the “rapture” text as a quiet affair.  As I said yesterday, you must read INTO the text this quietness.  The Lord descends with a cry of command, the voice of an archangel, and the trumpet of God.

Speaking of trumpets, notice the following verses:

1 Thess. 4:16 – the Lord returns with the trumpet of God and raptures the living.

1 Cor. 15:51-52 – “Behold! I tell you a mystery.  We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the LAST trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised, imperishable, and we shall be changed.”

There is no doubt Paul is referring to the same event in these two letters.  It is the event we call the rapture.  So the trumpet call is the “last” trumpet call.

Now read Matthew 24:29-31 and note the presence of the trumpet call.  As I understand Scripture, the rapture of the living believer takes place at the Lord’s second coming, not some 7 years before it.

While we may disagree on this, two things we may agree on are these:  Jesus is coming back and ALL his followers will be forever with Him!

Pastor’s Postscripts

I am grateful for everyone who attended our service yesterday morning.  We are not a large congregation and, when two or more families are out of town on the same Sunday, their absence is keenly felt!  Furthermore, I appreciate the band leading us in singing despite missing 40% of their members!  And it was also a blessing to have Audrey back with us and even singing a special song as part of our worship service.  Thanks to each of you for utilizing your gifts in the service of Christ!

I’m certain many of you are sharing Christ with those who are lost and I encourage you to continue to do so.  But, if you seem to be making little progress, at least extend them and invitation to attend church with you on Sunday.  The Lord uses multiple methods for bringing His sheep into the Kingdom.  As Paul wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”  Perhaps your testimony to your family, friends, and acquaintances is the planting.  And perhaps their attendance at church will be their watering.  Perhaps then God will be pleased to provide their growth into a child of God!

Autumn is now here and the holidays are rapidly approaching.  Please join us this Saturday for our annual bonfire, somewhat a mark of the approaching end of the year.  It’s always a good time of fellowship.

See you then or, at least, on Sunday!

Titus 3:8

“A Christian man is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none.  A Christian man is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” Martin Luther on our freedom in Christ

Sermon Extras

1.  In verse 2 of chapter 4 Paul writes, “For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus”.  The Thessalonians “knew” the teaching Paul had shared.  They knew God’s Word.  How about you and me?

2.  Many of our English translations render verse 3 as “For this is the will of God, your sanctification”.  Such a translation gives the reader the impression that God’s entire will (“THE will”) has to do with your sanctification.  Actually, the original writing does not contain the article (“the”) before the word “will”.  So, what Paul is talking about is not the entire will of God but a portion of His will.

3.  The Contemporary English Version translates verse 3 in an interesting way:  “God wants you to be holy”.  Holiness, indeed, is the very heart of sanctification.  Only holy people can dwell in the present of our thrice holy God.  God declared us holy in our justification; He is making us more and more holy in our sanctification, and will complete our holiness in our glorification!

September Soup, Salad, Sandwich Fellowship

Bring soup, salad, sandwich, or dessert and drink to share this coming Sunday morning (September 15).  We’ll fellowship following our morning worship service.  Come out and enjoy good food as well as good conversation and sharing!

“A regenerated, reconciled soul living contentedly on in sin, ‘that grace may abound’—the very conception is in Paul’s estimation a horror and an impossibility.”
John Lillie

APPLE PICKING!

If you wish to pick apples this Saturday (14th) with church members, please contact Karla.  Everyone is meeting in Grafton, IL at 10 a.m.

CHURCH WORK DAY!

The Trustees have scheduled a church work day for Saturday, September 21.  Members will gather at 8 a.m. and work around the facility, preparing it for the upcoming winter.

“A Christian can never be fully satisfied with his spiritual growth (i.e., sanctification).  He must always push onward and upward until he is with the Lord in glory!”

Pastor’s Postscripts

This Wednesday is our monthly business meeting and I am aware of at least two of the items we will cover at the meeting.

1.  The Diamonds have requested to join our fellowship.  Per our church bylaws, we will vote on their request during the business meeting.

2.  The Trustees have been considering options for replacing our church sign.  I’m certain we will have an update on their progress.

I encourage our members to plan to attend and participate in the meeting at 7 p.m. this Wednesday.

On another note, Pam and Dennis are back from Texas!  We praise the Lord for their safe travel and look forward to seeing them this Wednesday.  I am especially delighted they have returned so Dennis can, once again, lead our hymn singing next Sunday morning!

Lastly, we will continue our exposition of 1 Thessalonians this Sunday as Paul further shares thoughts on the matter of sanctification.  This will naturally lead us to his discussion of the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  I say naturally for:  (1)  the Lord’s coming marks the end of our sanctification and (2) our sanctification is designed to prepare us for His coming.

So bring your Bible on Sunday and join me in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4!
